The diffuse neutrino flux from the inner Galaxy: constraints from very high energy gamma-ray observations

چکیده
Recently, the MILAGRO collaboration reported on the detection of a diffuse multiTeV emission from a region of the Galactic disk close to the inner Galaxy. The emission is in excess of what is predicted by conventional models for cosmic ray propagation, which are tuned to reproduce the spectrum of cosmic rays observed locally. By assuming that the excess detected by MILAGRO is of hadronic origin and that it is representative for the whole inner Galactic region, we estimate the expected diffuse flux of neutrinos from a region of the Galactic disk with coordinates −40 < l < 40. Our estimate has to be considered as the maximal expected neutrino flux compatible with all the available gamma ray data, since any leptonic contribution to the observed gamma-ray emission would lower the neutrino flux. The diffuse flux of neutrinos, if close to the maximum allowed level, may be detected by a km3–scale detector located in the northern hemisphere. A detection would unambiguously reveal the hadronic origin of the diffuse gamma-ray emission.

Cosmic - Ray Electrons and the Diffuse Gamma - Ray Spectrum
Short Title: Cosmic-ray electrons and diffuse gamma-ray spectrum 1 Abstract The bulk of the diffuse galactic gamma-ray emission above a few tens of GeV has been conventionally ascribed to the decay of neutral pions produced in cosmic-ray interactions with interstellar matter. Cosmic-ray electrons may, however, make a significant contribution to the gamma-ray spectrum at high energies, and even ...
متن کاملHigh-energy gamma-ray and neutrino backgrounds from clusters of galaxies and radio constraints
Cosmic-ray protons accumulate for cosmological times in clusters of galaxies because their typical radiative and diffusive escape times are longer than the Hubble time. Their hadronic interactions with protons of the intra-cluster medium generate secondary electrons, gamma rays, and neutrinos. In light of the high-energy neutrino events recently discovered by the IceCube neutrino observatory, f...
متن کاملOn the detection prospects of the neutrino flux from Centaurus A and the associated diffuse neutrino flux
Recently Cuoco and Hannestad have presented estimates for the neutrino flux of Centaurus A under the assumption that two out of the 27 highest energy cosmic-ray events observed by the Pierre Auger collaboration can be attributed to this galaxy. In this work we elaborate on this assumption and estimate the diffuse neutrino flux assuming that all cosmic-ray sources are similar to Centaurus A. Wit...

The survey of the inner Galaxy with H.E.S.S. [1, 2] was remarkably successful in detecting a wide range of new very-high-energy gamma-ray sources. New TeV gamma-ray emitting source classes were established, although several of the sources remain unidentified, and progress has been made in understanding particle acceleration in astrophysical sources. In this work, we constructed a model of a pop...
متن کاملSearch for Gamma Ray Emission from Galactic Plane with Milagro
The majority of galactic gamma rays are produced by interaction of cosmic rays with matter. This results in a diffuse radiation concentrated in the galactic plane where the flux of cosmic rays and the density of material (mostly atomic, molecular and ionized hydrogen) is high. The interactions producing gamma rays include, among others, the decay of π’s produced in spallation reactions. Gamma e...
